A promise made over frozen yogurt in Toronto, a teenage bet, was always going to come due somewhere. It came due under the open sky of St Mark's, where the roof fell away long ago and the old stone cloister keeps only walls, light, and whatever words are spoken inside them.
Some journeys turn out to be returns. Together since 2012, the couple had crossed twenty-five countries before they brought a hundred guests across the Atlantic. For the groom this was no destination. His family has been here long enough that baka has been in his mouth since childhood, and his middle name belongs to one of them.

The day began softly beneath the Baroque ceilings of Palace Elisabeth, then moved outward toward the water. A photograph keeps a vow as a face. A film keeps it as a voice, the old promise arriving in the order it was finally said, with the stone listening.
Then the evening ran down to the sea's edge at Beach Club Hvar. Late in the night they were still dancing beneath string lights, with the moon in plain sight above the Adriatic.
